As owner Michiel of Logies op Dreef in Driebergen, I often get asked, "Where is the best place to stay for a relaxing weekend in Utrecht?"
My answer is always the same: why choose a small hotel room in the city center when you can also enjoy peace, space and bird sounds on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug - and still be in the heart of Utrecht within twenty minutes?
That combination of nature and city is exactly what makes a weekend special. You start your day with the sound of coffee beans in the mill - no one asking if you're awake yet. You then walk into the forest where your breath deepens and your shoulders finally drop. In the afternoon you sit on a terrace on the Oudegracht, and in the evening you step off the bus back into silence. No voices in the hallway. No keys you hear next door. Only bird sounds. That's what a personal B&B experience about.
Why a B&B on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is perfect for your weekend
For many travelers, a weekend in Utrecht begins with a small hotel room in a crowded corridor. With us, it's different.
Privacy and space — more than a hotel room
Maybe you know that feeling: you book a hotel room and you're still trapped. Other rooms on either side. Someone in the hallway laughing. The elevator squeaking.
A weekend should feel like you are really away for a while. Not trapped between two other guests, but with space where you can really breathe.
Our studios offer that other reality: you close the door and you have everything to yourself. No footsteps over your head. No unexpected knocks on the door. The difference with a hotel in Utrecht is exactly that - here you are not a number in a row of rooms, but really have your own place.
You have your own entrance, your own kitchen, your own bathroom. You can make coffee in the morning in your pajamas without running into anyone. You decide when you have breakfast, what you eat, and when you go out the door. You don't get that freedom in a hotel.
The small scale also means that we have personal contact. I'm happy to give you tips about the area, but you don't have to compulsorily sit at the table with strangers. That's the privacy and private kitchen on the Hillside appreciate those guys.
Ambience and taste — fresh coffee and local honey
With us, fresh coffee and local honey is not an extra, but a regular part of every stay.
There is an espresso machine with freshly roasted beans waiting for you. No watery filter coffee from a thermos pot, but a real espresso that you brew yourself, just the way you like it. Specialty coffee is part of a good start to the day.
Next to the coffee is a jar of honey from our own apiary. Not imported supermarket honey, but raw honey from the hives literally behind the house. If you are lucky and the season is right, you can still see the bees flying.
That combination of a perfect espresso and a spoonful of local honey on fresh bread gives a vacation feeling that a buffet in a hotel restaurant can never match. It's a quiet way to get started that instantly makes you feel like you're away from the daily grind.
Want to learn more about coffee or bees? Then you can even take a barista workshop or beekeeper workshop with us. That kind of extra experience makes your weekend completely different from a standard hotel stay. Look for more details on our page about specialty coffee and local honey.
City and nature — the best of both worlds
The location of our B&B in Driebergen is ideal: the center of Utrecht can be reached in twenty minutes, while on the other hand you are directly in the National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
'In the morning you walk through the forest. The Green Lung begins at the front door. The Aderwinkelpad runs practically past our house. The Stichtse Lustwarande with all its estates is around the corner. The Kromme Rijn meanders quietly through the region.
'In the afternoon you get on the train (Driebergen-Zeist Station is a ten-minute bike ride away) and within fifteen minutes you are at the Neude. Or you catch the bus that stops practically in front of the door.
That combination works perfectly. The hustle and bustle of the city during the day, the silence of nature at night. No traffic jam to get out of town after a day of shopping. No stress about parking (which is free with us, saving you €20-30 per day compared to Utrecht center).
Planning Your Perfect Weekend: A Step-by-Step Guide
A good weekend starts with a good plan. Not a rigid agenda, but a clear idea of what you want to do and what it will take.
How much does a weekend in Utrecht cost?
The budget for a weekend in Utrecht depends on your preferences. Some hotels may seem inexpensive, but they often lack a private kitchen and offer little privacy. At Logies op Dreef, we offer a fair price: a fully equipped studio with a kitchen, personalized service, and free parking.
On average, count on:
- Overnight stay: Varies per season and studio
- Food: Budget €30-50 per day - Utrecht has good options for every wallet. With your own kitchen, you can have your own breakfast and save costs.
- Activities: The Cathedral Tower costs €14.50 per person. Many courtyards and walks are free.
- Transportation: Free parking at our residence saves a lot of money. A day ticket for public transport costs about €7.
If you plan smartly and use your own kitchen for breakfast, you can experience a whole weekend for €150-250 per person, including accommodation and activities.
The best time for a weekend in Utrecht
Utrecht has a different atmosphere every season, and frankly, they are all beautiful.
In spring, the city blossoms with blossoms along the canals. The parks turn green, the terraces open, and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug colors with wildflowers. Ideal for those who love hiking.
Summer is perfect for a day on the Oudegracht with boat rides and sidewalk cafes. The evenings are long, so you can quietly enjoy the setting sun in the woods after a day in the city.
In autumn the forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug turn beautiful orange and red. The combination of city and nature is at its best then. Walking through the leaves on the Aderwinkel trail and then hot chocolate in the center - that's an autumn weekend.
In winter, the city is extra cozy with Christmas markets and warm cafes. The peace and quiet on the Heuvelrug is intense then. Snow in the woods, a wood fire at home (figuratively then, because we have floor heating), and in the evening the lights of Utrecht in the distance.
Every season has its charm. Choose based on what you want: active outdoor days (spring/autumn), terraces and festivals (summer), or coziness and tranquility (winter).
Planning for a weekend
A practical daily schedule helps make the most of your weekend without stress.
Day 1 (Saturday): You arrive in Driebergen and check in at Logies op Dreef. Checking in is possible from 16:00, but if you want to check in earlier that is often possible (early check-in from 13:00 for a fee). You get a personal code for the door, so you are not dependent on someone being home.
Start with a short walk in the Green Lung. Half an hour through the forest - you hear only your own footsteps on the path, the rustling of the wind through the pines. The moment when you notice that you are no longer thinking about mail. Then you can settle in the studio, maybe make an espresso with that local honey on the side.
In the evening, seek out the coziness of Utrecht for dinner in the wharf cellars on Oudegracht or a concert at Tivoli Vredenburg. The bus will get you there in 35 minutes, or you can catch the train for a faster trip.
Day 2 (Sunday): Start the day quietly with coffee and independent breakfast in your studio. No rush, no buffet where you have to stand in line. You can decide what and when to eat.
Followed by a walk through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Mountain bike routes also start literally at the doorstep if you like cycling. Along the way, perhaps visit one of the castles in the area: Landgoed Dennenburg is nearby, or drive a little further to Leersum (Klein Groenbergen B&B is located there), Doorn, Zeist or Amerongen. All these villages have their own charm.
In the afternoon, you can go into the city for a visit to the Dom Tower or the Central Museum, after which you'll return home relaxed. Check-out is until 11:00 am, but with your personal code you can get in and out at any time.

Top activities in Utrecht — tips from a local
The city has enough to offer for an entire weekend, but as a local, I also know where to find the hidden gems.
The main highlights
The Cathedral Tower is the figurehead of the city. The tower is 112 meters high and after a considerable climb of 465 steps, you have a great view of the surroundings. The tower was recently restored and looks beautiful again.
Under the Domplein you will find DOMunder, where you will discover the history of the city literally under the ground. Roman remains, medieval foundations, the story of 2000 years of Utrecht - that's what you'll see there.
The combination of the tower (up) and DOMunder (down) gives a complete view of the city. Do book in advance, as both attractions are popular.
The canals and the wharf cellars
The Oudegracht is the heart of the city. The historic waterfront wharf cellars are unique and full of quaint restaurants and stores. This is the place where Utrecht really comes alive.
During your visit, also try a Utrecht Vockingworst sandwich from the local butcher, a true classic of the region. Little details like that make a visit complete.

Culture and hidden places
The Central Museum offers a nice mix of art and city history. Another must-see is the Rietveld Schröder House, world-famous for its extraordinary architecture.
Prefer to seek peace and quiet? The medieval courtyards, such as the Cathedral's Pandhof, are hidden paradises right in the center. You walk right past them if you don't know they're there. That's the advantage of local tips.
Utrechtse Heuvelrug — nature on your doorstep
Driebergen-Rijsenburg is the perfect base for nature lovers. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park literally begins at your doorstep.
Walking and cycling from the accommodation
The Green Lung nature reserve literally begins at your doorstep. Several hiking trails start that take you through the woods and over the ridge.
The Aderwinkelpad is a beautiful hiking trail that runs practically past our house. After a busy day in Utrecht, this is the ideal way to clear your head completely.
There are numerous opportunities for cyclists. The Stichtse Lustwarande is a ribbon of estates and country houses that you can explore by bike. Mountain bike routes crisscross the entire area - feel free to ask me about the best trails.
The Kromme Rijn meanders quietly through the region, offering beautiful cycling routes along the water. You can spend a whole day biking without taking the same road twice.
Check out our tips for walking and cycling on the Heuvelrug for specific routes and distances.
Castles and estates
The region is known for its many historic country estates. The Dennenburg Estate is a beautiful example. The entire Utrechtse Heuvelrug is full of these kinds of historical treasures that are well worth a visit.
In the nearby villages you will also find beautiful places: Leersum, Doorn, Zeist, Amerongen and Rhenen each have their own castles or mansions. A tour of these villages is a perfect Sunday afternoon activity.
Who is this weekend ideal for?
The question is not whether a weekend in Utrecht is for you, but what type of weekend you want. That determines where you spend the night.
Couples — romantic and peaceful
A weekend Utrecht for two starts with complete privacy with us. You have your own studio and can go wherever you want.
During the day you enjoy the city or nature, and at night you unwind in the silence of the Hillside. No hotel corridor where people walk by. No shared breakfast where you are required to be social.
Just the two of you, a good glass of wine, and the peace of the forest outside your window. That's precious. For more romantic tips, also read our article on a romantic stay Utrecht.
Solo travelers — time for yourself
Maybe you're tired of talking. Of explaining what you're doing. Of having to be 'cozy' at breakfast.
Sometimes you just want to get away on your own. No company, no planning, no obligations.
With us, that's okay. You can see no one all day if you want. Drink coffee in silence in the morning - no one asking how you slept. Read a book without being disturbed. Taking a walk when you want, not when the group goes. That's the freedom solo travelers love.
Nature lovers — forest and heathland
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park offers a varied landscape of forests and sand drifts. From Logies op Dreef you are in the middle of this area within minutes.
It is the ideal place for anyone who loves hiking and the outdoors. In August, the moors turn purple. In autumn, the forest turns into a golden splendor.
Hotel or B&B for your weekend in Utrecht?
I get that question on a regular basis. The answer depends on what you're really looking for: a place to sleep, or a place to let go for a while.
Maybe you're tired of always being reachable. Tired of having to get cozy over breakfast. No one wanting anything from you for a while.
| Feature | Standard Hotel Utrecht | Logies op Dreef |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Corridor with dozens of rooms, neighbors audible | Private studio, private entrance, no one around |
| Breakfast | Buffet with set times, queuing | Independent, your own pace, your kitchen |
| Parking | €25 per night in garage | Free at the door |
| Space | Bed + bathroom | Full studio with kitchen and sitting area |
| Contact | Anonymous, reception for questions | Personal, local tips if you like |
| Freedom | Check-in times, breakfast times | 24/7 access, your rhythm |
The difference is not just in characteristics. It's in how you feel. A small guesthouse gives you the space to stay overnight with all the comforts of home, but in an environment where you are completely detached from everything for a while.
Are you ready to combine the hustle and bustle of the day with a quiet place to sleep? The combination of city and nature makes a weekend in Utrecht from the Heuvelrug special.
