Beekeeping Workshop Experience

Almost everyone who stands among the bees here for the first time says the same thing afterward: that it was calmer than they expected. The buzzing, the warmth of the colony, the scent of wax and honey, and the way hundreds of bees come together as one—it really moves you.

That’s exactly why I’m offering this experience as a standalone option, without requiring you to stay overnight. You don’t have to want to become a beekeeper to try this out just once. Maybe you’re just curious. Maybe you’re looking for a unique gift. Or maybe you want to find out if beekeeping is something for you.

I deliberately offer this experience on a one-on-one basis. This gives you plenty of opportunity to ask questions, observe at your own pace, and gradually get used to working among the bees. And just as important: this minimizes disruption to the colony.

Try our honey

A personalized alternative

Not a large group where you mostly just watch, but a one-on-one experience with plenty of time for your questions. This allows you to get used to things, take your time, and truly understand what you’re seeing.

Logies op Dreef Beekeeping: Responsible Beekeeping

Learn to look calmly

Beekeeping isn't about acting tough; it's about paying attention. You'll learn how to move calmly, what to look out for, and why a bee colony is often much calmer than people initially think.

Apiary on Dreef

Work with bees

You’ll put on a protective suit, walk over to the hives with me, and help me open up a real bee colony. I’ll let you take your time looking at the combs, the bees, the brood, and the honey stores.

Winter Lodging at Dreef

Prefer to go out in any weather?

The Beekeeper Experience is seasonal. If you're looking for an experience that's available year-round, even in rain or cold weather, check out the Barista Experience.

Who is this experience for?

For anyone looking for a unique experience that almost no one has ever had. For the gift-giver who wants to go beyond a bottle of wine, a dinner voucher, or a standard outing. For a birthday, anniversary, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or an original corporate gift.

This is also a great first step for nature lovers and aspiring hobby beekeepers. You don’t need to know anything, be brave, or have any special skills. All you need is a curiosity about what goes on inside a beehive—and a willingness to watch quietly.

Is there no date available, or are you giving it as a gift? Then choose a gift certificate. The recipient can schedule a convenient time during the season. That way, I can work at your pace, and the disruption to the colony is kept to a minimum.

What you'll be doing in 2.5 hours

Welcome & Preparation (approx. 30 min)

I’ll meet you in the yard and calmly explain what we’re going to do. You’ll put on a full protective suit and gloves, and I’ll show you how to move among the bees: calmly, attentively, and without rushing. I’ll also briefly explain how a bee colony is structured, so you’ll have a better understanding of what you see inside the hive.

Among the Bees (approx. 1.5 hours)

Together, we’ll open a beehive. You’ll examine the combs, see where the honey, pollen, and brood are located, and learn how a beekeeper inspects a colony. If the time is right, we’ll also look for the queen. With every step, I’ll explain what we’re doing and why, so you’re not just watching, but really understand what’s happening.

I wanted to give my wife something she would never expect. This was it. — Guest, Beekeeper Experience

Honey Tasting & Discussion (approx. 30 min)

After working with the bees, we’ll wrap up with a tasting of our own unprocessed honey from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. We’ll taste the honey, chat, and I’ll answer your questions. Maybe you’re wondering how you could start beekeeping yourself someday. Or maybe you just wanted to experience this once. Either way is fine.

Would you like to explore the world of bees in more depth?

This page is all about the experience itself. Would you like to read more about beekeeping, honey, and our apiary—either before or after? If so, feel free to check out my blogs:

Why choose me?

I’ve been keeping bees on this property since 2016. Over the years, I’ve learned that beekeeping isn’t a trick, but a combination of calmness, observation, and patience. You learn to look before you act. You learn to move without haste. And you learn that a bee colony is often much more organized and calmer than you might initially think.

That’s not something you can really appreciate in a large group. That’s why I always offer this experience on a one-on-one basis. That way, you get my full attention, I can go at your pace, and the disruption to others is kept to a minimum.

The location helps, too. You’re here on a quiet farmyard in Driebergen, right in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, yet still close to Utrecht. It’s a chance to get away from the city without having to travel far.

  • Number of people: Always one-on-one, meaning one participant per session. Price: €60 per person, including 21% VAT.
  • Included: protective suit, gloves, guided tour, hands-on beehive work, and honey tasting.
  • Accommodations: Not necessary. You book this experience separately. If you’d still like to add a night’s stay, you can do so separately based on the availability of our studios.
  • In case of bad weather: If it rains, is cold, or the temperature is too low, we’ll reschedule. We only work with the bees if it’s safe for you and the colony.

Your Experience Among the Bees

What I love about this experience is that in just a few hours, you get to do something you wouldn’t normally do. You’re not standing behind glass looking at a beehive; instead, you put on the suit yourself, stand amidst the buzzing, and see up close how a colony lives.

Sometimes people arrive feeling a little nervous. Bees are still a bit intimidating, after all. But they almost always leave feeling more at ease than when they arrived—with honey on their tongues, a story to share at home, and a whole new perspective on what goes on inside a hive.

See you among the bees,

Warm regards,
Michiel Nouwens
